There has been a sharp surge in Indian student numbers, especially from Gujarat. The Federal administration of the United States is welcoming more of them to study in USA with the student visa approval numbers rising. Earlier, students preferred Australia and New Zealand. But now, the trend has shifted with more opting for US education. The reason is due to the Covid-19 related restrictions imposed by these two countries and even travel restrictions. These factors are keeping the student community from Gujarat away. It is, however, a ray of hope with Indian students opting for studies in the US and with many countries imposing strict travel restrictions with visas getting harder. The success rate for US visa holders is at an all-time high and with nearly 95% applicants. It was October 2021 that recorded the highest success rate for those applicants who received US visas. Sources said those individuals whose visas expired earlier received their visas during the pandemic. The visa numbers from 2015 to 2020 recorded a 40% success rate and with the figure rising to 95% now. As per the data released by the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) earlier, more than 2.5 lakh students managed to travel for further studies overseas owing to travel curbs in 2020. In May 2021, consulates and embassies started interviewing fall semester (late September to December months) students. It was the pandemic delaying the commencement of students by two months. Sources describe nearly 15,000 students from Gujarat prefer USA and Canada every year. More than 55,000 Indian students and exchange visitors were granted US student visas in 2021. The number is at an all-time high despite several traveling challenges.
